HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY: History

Since 1993 Family Connections has worked with the community to provide family support, community building, organizing, address neighborhood concerns, and develop concrete solutions.

Excelsior Family Connections opened its doors in the Jean Jacobs Coleman Advocates Building on the 5th of January 2004. The space was approximately 550 square feet and a great place to begin establishing our programs and services. It wasn’t long before we started to experience a steady increase in the need for our services

Due to the large volume of underserved families in the neighborhood, our programs were at full capacity on a daily basis. In order to accommodate the growing enrollment, it became evident that EFC needed to expand and relocate to a larger space. .

In 2007, Excelsior Family Connections received contributions from the S.H. Cowell Foundation to support the move to a new center. The larger space opened opportunities for capacity building. We are now located in a 2,000 square feet family resource center, conveniently located between Mission Street and Alemany Blvd. Our large windows and space create visibility and promote a stronger presence in the community. The new center has allowed us to expand our programs and serve more participants.

Our services are community-driven. We are dedicated to working with parents, school staff, community organizations, and relevant public agencies to implement the program for optimal success. We strongly believe that the role of parents and caregivers is that of leaders, visionaries, advisors, and facilitators -- our philosophy is that "our programs are for the community, by the community, and of the community." Accordingly, our programs and services are participant-driven and guided by ongoing input and feedback from our monthly Parent Advisory Board, participant satisfaction surveys, and continuous participant dialogue with program staff.
